Marriage Registration Certificate process Application Requirements

A marriage certificate is an official declaration that states that two people are married. Indian marriage can be registered under Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 or under Special Marriage Act, 1954 for both types of marriage. This certificate is legitimate proof that couple is married. In 2006, Supreme Court made mandatory to register marriage for safeguarding women’s rights. Marriage certificate has various benefits. For marriage, couple must have a sudden age so that they get married and get a certificate.

Reasons to Obtain a Marriage certificate

This certificate is essential documents while applying for passport or opening Bank account with new surname post-wedding. Also in case of foreign travels or visa processing and many other embassies request a copy of a marriage certificate. Hence marriage certificate is obligatory many couples to move abroad after wedding.

Documents Required for Marriage Registration

To complete marriage registration and obtain marriage certificate in Tamil Nadu, below documents must be there and have to submit both husband and wife. Documents can be divided into three categories as follow below.

Marriage Registration under Hindu Act

In this Act, marriage must have been solemnized under Hindu customer or non-customary and bride & groom must be Hindu. If there are belonging to some other religion then follow some premises shall fall.

Marriage Registration under Tamil Nadu Marriage Act

In this case of marriage act, marriage could have been solemnized under personal law. This marriage can be registered within 90 days without fine and within 90-150 days with a fine. After that marriage cannot be registered under Tamil Nadu Registration of Marriage Act.

Special Marriage Registration

Type of marriage can be solemnized before registration officer in any form. Bridegroom and Bride should have to complete 21 years and 18 years of age respective. Notice of intended marriage must be first issued. If no objection of marriage is received within 30 days from notice period. Marriage will get registered.

Christian Marriage Registration

In this case under this act licensee will be under or by Priest. Marriage extract is given in office of Inspector General of Registration at 100, Santhome High Road, Chennai – 600 028.

Online Marriage Registration

Select your district and continue ->Fill in husband’s details and choose “Registration of Marriage Certificate”->Fill in Marriage Certificate form and choose date of appointment->Click “Submit Application”

After all, take acknowledge letter or slip and take print out of it.

Appointment

In case of Hindu Marriage Act, appointment would be registered within 15 days of online registration. In case of Special Marriage Act, it might take up to 60 days.

Witness

Any person who has made an appearance at marriage registration of couple shall be a witness and that witness must have a valid PAN card and a Proof of resident.
